Why Cotton?
Cotton, all by itself, provides the firmest sleeping surface. A cotton futon mattress provides for good air circulation while maintaining more even humidity and balanced temperatures. It has the ideal density for firm yet comfortable bedding. Pure cotton will not offgas any chemicals or gases, and 100% organic cotton mattresses are the safest, healthiest, most natural, non-toxic mattresses available. These cotton futon mattresses are perfect for people with chemical sensitivities or allergies.
Conventional Mattresses are Toxic
Conventional mattresses are often made of petroleum-based polyester, nylon and polyurethane (PU) foam that will give off harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with upper respiratory problems, SIDS and neurological problems. These mattresses also contain harmful fire retardant chemicals that are highly toxic to adults, children, and especially babies. No machinery, no mass production. White Lotus artisans make each product one by one. They have been doing this for over 25 years.
White Lotus mattresses are layered - one layer at a time - by hand. They hand-quilt the mattresses with a thin, sharp needle to ensure that the batting won't break, shift or lump. These mattresses normally last 10 to 15 years. They are not your traditional futons.
Some machine-made mattresses actually blow cotton into a case instead of layering it so what you're buying is a big sack of air with some cotton. After a few weeks the air will seep out and you'll be left with something that is not very comfortable. Also, machine-made mattresses are often quilted with thick punctures through the cotton which tend to break up the bats.
These mattresses work great on platform beds, can be used on top of a box spring, on the floor, and on bi-fold and tri-fold futon frames.
NOTE: These cotton futons may have a natural botanical cotton odor that should dissipate with time. Most people don’t notice it or don’t mind it, but some people can be sensitive to the natural botanical smell. We provide samples free of charge.

All the White Lotus chemical-free mattresses are handcrafted separately, in a room that is properly cleansed twice a month to make sure that no other fibers contact your natural products. There are no chemical fire retardants and no borate powder. There is nothing at all in this mattress except cotton and wool.
This mattress will be wool wrapped. Meaning, the outer most layer will be 100% New Zealand Virgin Wool and the rest GREEN cotton. GREEN cotton means that once the cotton is harvested from the bolls, it is unprocessed - no bleaches, dyes or fungicides. more info...
